Advanced Life Support training

We had an intensive day of advanced life support training on 25th June.

It was really good to be able to practice all of our emergency procedures.

Because we offer sedation our training for life support and administering emergency drugs has to be performed to a high standard.

Bisphosphonate drugs and their relevance to dentistry

The Dental Implant Clinic team member Elliott Ballantyne completed his MSc thesis on the use  of bisphosphonates in dentistry. He is presenting a poster on the subject at the international Osteology Conference in Monaco this April.

Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs used to treat a variety of disorders. One of the most common uses for this drug is to treat the condition of osteoporosis and osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis). They can also be given after the treatment of certain cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer.

There are several types of bisphosphonate:

Disodium pamidronate (Aredia)
Ibandronic acid or ibandronate (Bondronat)
Sodium clodronate (Bonefos, Clasteon, Loron)
Zoledronic acid or zoledronate (Zometa)

The bisphosponates work by targeting areas of higher bone turnover and slowing the rate of bone loss which is caused by cells in the bone called osteoclasts. The bisphosphonate drugs  are absorbed by the osteoclasts which slows down their activity and reduce bone loss. However, the slow down of bone loss caused by bisphosphonate drugs also reduces the rate of bone healing. This can sometimes be a problem if if you need to have a tooth extracted or need dental implants.

May people who are already taking bishphosphonates can still have a tooth extraction or a dental implant because it depends on the dose, type of bisphosphonate and how long you have been taking it for.

Some important points to note are:

  • Tell your dentist if you have started or about to start these drugs
  • Before taking these drugs it is best to have a thorough check up to ensure that your teeth and implants are healthy

Mrs Binks’ implants are performing well after 17 years

Jonathan Schofield, Principal at The Dental Implant Clinic, writes about reconnecting with a patient whose implants are still performing well 17 years after their placement.

I had lost contact with a Mrs Binks on whom I had placed 7 implants in in 1998.

Happy with her implants 17 years later.

Happy with her implants 17 years later.

She has subsequently moved to Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, which is 532 miles from Bath. I was recently contacted by her new dentist in Inverurie, who was asking for some details about Mrs. Binks’ implants. I was able to furnish him with the information he needed along with some information on how to maintain her dental implants.

After this Mrs. Binks kindly wrote to me as follows:

Dear Mr. Schofield,

Thank you so much for your kindness in forwarding the necessary info to the Practice in Inverurie. Up to this year I’ve been visiting Bristol fairly regularly & seeing Robert Pears, but my travelling is not so frequent now & I felt I ought to register with a dentist nearer home!

The implants have been great – thanks to you – and I trust they will remain so.

Once again, many thanks.

Sincerely,

Nancy Binks

Professor Belser visits The Dental Implant Clinic

The team at The Dental Implant Clinic were delighted to welcome Professor Urs Belser from The University of Berne in Switzerland to a study group meeting.

Jonathan, Tim, Colin and Elliott have all spent time at The University of Berne gaining advanced dental implant training, so it was their great pleasure to host Professor Belser in Bath.

The study group concentrated on advanced dental implant issues and all who participated improved their skills and knowledge.
